Garfield
General County Information

County Seat: Enid

Originally a part of the Cherokee Outlet opened for settlement during the Land Run of September 16, 1893, Garfield County, Oklahoma Territory, was named for President James A. Garfield. Enid, the county seat, has two major employers -- Vance Air Force Base and Northrop-Grumman Technical Services, Inc. Local businesses manufacture such products as anhydrous ammonia, petroleum coke, drilling rigs, steel fabricators, dairy goods and processed meats. Although oil has provided a great deal of revenue, Garfield County is best known for its wheat production. Recreational facilities include public golf courses, parks, and a swimming pool. Average wages in most job categories are slightly lower than in Oklahoma's two primary metropolitan areas (Tulsa and Oklahoma City). Enid has minimal unionization in that 7% or less of the Garfield County workforce is unionized (Oklahoma ranks 13th lowest in the percent of all workers who are union members).
